The endless continuity of birch forests set against massive, white mineral cliffs

My work revolves around two main themes:
First, the theme of the Normandy cliffs, which I know well, and which I have been observing and painting for nearly 30 years.

And then, more recently, a very interesting theme emerged following several trips to Lapland, Finland, and Iceland.
It is about these vast vertical lines of birch trees. In these birches, in these verticalities, I see a parallel with those great mineral walls—those massive white cliffs.

I would add that there is also a sequential dimension to my work.
By that I mean I like it when forms repeat and patterns unfold. We find this same sequential aspect in this infinite succession of birches stretching out.
There is almost a form of writing here—the lenticels you see on the tree trunks.
They are like calligraphic signs, which can also, of course, be found in these rocky cliff faces.

Sculpture entered my practice about 5 or 6 years ago. It was, in a way, the culmination of all my work as a painter on this theme of cliffs.
I wanted to step slightly out of my comfort zone—not that painting was necessarily comfortable, but rather to take risks and try to find other territories in which to express this monumental subject.

I started modestly with clay, grogged clay (terre chamottée), and then moved on to larger pieces whose originals are in plaster. I subsequently had them cast in bronze at the foundry.
