Natural Circle
En explorant le concept de cette vidéo, nous sommes tombés sur un livre de photos.
“Freddy the Leaf” du pédagogue américain Dr. Leo F Buscaglia.
Il s’agit d’un livre d’images sur Freddy, une feuille d’érable, qui enseigne aux enfants le pèlerinage et l’importance de la “vie”.
Freddy naît au printemps, passe l’été et l’automne, et lorsqu’il voit ses amis se disperser un par un en hiver, il retourne lui aussi à la terre pour nourrir une nouvelle vie et renaître au printemps.
Nous avons intitulé cette vidéo “Natural Circle” à partir du cercle de vie.
J’ai commencé mon travail en dessinant une feuille d’un grand érable situé le long de Park Avenue, alors que je me rendais à mon atelier.
Au départ, j’envisageais de dessiner des feuilles d’érable avec mon habituel stylo de calligraphie, d’éponger l’encre avec un pinceau à pointe biseautée, de faire un traçage vectoriel sur l’ordinateur et de réaliser le tout en 3D.
Au final, tout a été mélangé pour dépeindre un seul morceau de la cosmologie unique de Marru et de son sens de la vie, comme le montre cette image.
La vidéo était également structurée comme un livre d’images, avec une mise en page simple comportant des pages de chaque côté, et le message était transmis en caractères d’imprimerie plutôt que par le biais d’une narration.
Il est intéressant de noter que Marru fonctionne selon le calendrier lunaire, plutôt que selon le calendrier occidental (koyomi). Il semble que les produits sortis jusqu’à présent aient été choisis en fonction des pleines lunes, des nouvelles lunes et des jours propices du calendrier lunaire.
Ce fim devait sortir le 3 février, le premier jour du printemps, après le premier jour de la saison froide, mais il ne l’a pas fait, et il est donc sorti le 12 février, le jour du Nouvel An chinois.
Chaque jour, en rentrant du studio, je regardais l’ombre de la lune dans le ciel nocturne et je me demandais : “La lune était-elle vraiment aussi rapide ? et la lune me battait les fesses.
Plus tard, il a enseigné l’éducation à son alma mater, l’université de Californie du Sud, où il a organisé un séminaire non diplômant intitulé “Love 1A”.
Il a vécu toute sa vie comme un éducateur, se concentrant sur l’éducation à la vie, l’importance de la vie et le lien entre les personnes dans la société.
Ce séminaire a conduit à la publication de LOVE (1972) et de The Fall of Freddie the Leaf (1982).
Ce fut un heureux Nouvel An lunaire, avec la naissance d’une autre œuvre d’amour.
Natural Circle
In exploring the concept for this video, I came across one photo-picture book.
It is “Freddy the Leaf” by Dr. Leo F Buscaglia, an American pedagogue.
The main character is Freddy, a maple leaf, who teaches children about life and its importance.
Freddy is born in spring, spends summer and fall, and as he watches his friends scatter one by one in winter, he teaches them that he too will return to the earth to nurture new life, and that he will be born again in spring.
We titled this video “Natural Circle” after the cycle of life.
There was a large maple tree along Park Avenue on the way to my studio, and I began my work with a drawing of a single leaf.
At first, I considered drawing the maple leaf with my usual calligraphy dip pen, blotting the ink with a brush with a beveled tip, vector tracing it on the computer, and making it 3D with computer graphics.
In the end, as shown in this photo, everything was mixed together to depict a single piece of Maalu’s unique cosmic vision and sense of life.
We decided to use a simple layout for the video, with pages on either side like a picture book, and to convey the message in print rather than through narration.
It is interesting to note that Maalu operates according to the lunar calendar, rather than the Western calendar (koyomi). It seems that the products released so far have been chosen for full moons, new moons, and auspicious days of the lunar calendar.
The release date of this PV was scheduled for February 3, the first day of spring after the first day of spring, but of course, it could not be released in time and ended up being February 12, the Chinese New Year.
Every day on my way home from the studio, I would look up at the moon’s shadow in the night sky and wonder, “Was the moon really this fast? and the moon would smack me on the butt.
The aforementioned Dr. Bhaskaria taught pedagogy at his alma mater, the University of Southern California, in later years, and held a non-credit seminar called “Love 1A.
He lived his entire life as an educator, focusing on the education of life, the importance of life, and the connection between people in society.
The seminar led to the publication of “Love” (1972) and “The Fall of Freddie the Leaf” (1982).
It was a happy Lunar New Year with the birth of another work of love!

新しいアトリエでの記念すべき第一作目がリリースされました。
広島でオーガニックコットンを使って気持ちいいデザインパンツを作られているメーカーさん。
マアルさんのプロモーションビデオ 題して “Natural Circle” です。
この社名”マアル”というネーミングが好きで、商品名もなかなかに趣向が凝らされています。
女性用は満月パンツ、男性用は太陽パンツ！
最初見た時は「やられたー！」と思いました。

このネーミングや意味合いがうまく海外の人々にも伝わるようなお話しにしようと頭を巡らせ、コンセプトデザインを固める中で、１つの写真絵本に出会いました。
アメリカの教育学者 レオ・バスカーリア(Dr. Leo F Buscaglia)著『葉っぱのフレディ』
子供たちに ”いのち” の巡りや大切さを教える、楓の葉っぱ、フレディが主人公の写真絵本です。
春に生まれたフレディが、夏や秋を過ごし、冬になって友達が一枚一枚散っていくのを見ながら、自分も大地に返って新しい生命を育てる糧となり、春にまた生まれてくるというのを教えています。
この ”いのち” の巡りをNatural Circleと題して、会社のコンセプトに堂々掲げさせてもらいました。
日本人には、「マアル＝まある」という響きから、「まあるいのよね〜」と暗黙の了解で共感できる平和的なイメージがありますね。
海外に目を向けた場合は、もっと咀嚼して説明が必要なケースもあります。ので、ちょっと押し売り的にコンセプトをごり押しさせてもらいました。
丁度、ピヴォのアトリエに向かう公園通りに大きな楓の並木があり、一枚の葉っぱのデッサンから仕事が始まりました。
最初はいつも使っているカリグラフィーの付けペンで楓の葉を描いたり、筆先を斬髪した筆でインクを滲ませたり、コンピューターでベクトル・トレースしたり、CGでモデリングしたりと喧々諤々悩んでいましたが、最終的に、この写真のように、全てがごちゃ混ぜになって一枚のマアルさんらしい宇宙観、生命感が描き出せました。
ピヴォ的には、良い着地点となった一枚のビジュアルです。
ビデオの構成も、絵本のように左右にページがあるシンプルなレイアウトで、ナレーションではなく、活字でメッセージを伝えることにしました。
マアルさんは、西洋の暦(こよみ)ではなく、旧暦で運営をされているのも面白いところ。これまでにリリースされた商品は、満月や新月や旧暦の縁起のいい日を選ばれてきたようです。
で、このPVのリリース予定は、大寒が開けた、春の気立つ2月3日の立春だったのですが、こともあろうに間に合わなく、結局、2月12日の旧正月リリースになってしまいました。。。
毎日、アトリエからの帰り道、夜空の月の影を見上げながら、「月ってこんなにスピード速かったんか？」と月にお尻を叩かれていました。
前述のDr. バスカーリア 後年、母校である南カリフォルニア大学で、教育学の教鞭をとり、”Love 1A” という単位のないゼミを開催されていたそうです。
いのちの教育、いのちの大切さ、社会の人々のつながりをテーマに生涯、教育者として生きた彼。
そのゼミから生まれた『LOVE』(1972) 『The Fall of Freddie the Leaf (葉っぱのフレディ)』(1982) と著作が続きます。
愛ある作品がまたひとつ産み出され、幸せな旧正月となりました。
